Information Technology and Business Architecture (BA)
Projects are most often aimed at the technology element (hardware, operating systems, software) of the business architecture mix. However, the most important resource is the people who are involved in different processes and who ultimately perform the work, playing a pertinent role in ensuring an enterprise's success.
Business Architecture (BA) is an integrated approach, taking into account, on the one hand, the people and process elements, and on the other, technology.
Supporting People
Individuals perform many roles in a typical work day. These roles require access to software; the software has to perform certain functions. A role could, for example, refer to an activity in a particular business process.
Supporting Process
Business tasks are seldom performed in isolation. Sequence and authority are key elements of the business process. A complete business process links to other processes or even external business partners. Visibility of boundaries is crucial to good governance.
Managing Technology
The relationship between hardware, operating systems and software is a specialised field. This means that entities, information flows and subsequent storage are key descriptors of function to the technology specialist, and are referred to as:
• Business Entity Modelling
• Business Information Flow Modelling
• Repository Development
Embedding an internal BA capability in the organisation, requires an internal team to provide and support a BA perspective in the enterprise.
